So that they are expressed in a logical way, there is a need for the so called linking words. They may be, for instance, words like however, but, and, although and so on. One may state that a text can do without them and would not be mistaken. Yes, it is so, but having a lack of words and expressions like that, the text will seem not like a real representation of a creative process reflected by thinking, but only like a set of sentences. The first characteristic is called in other words coherence. With the aim of making a text and, consequently, the ideas expressed in it coherent, that is, logical, there exists a special class words called discourse markers. The actuality of the research is predetermined by the need of any discourse to have coherence since the latter proves the logics in a piece of writing or of an oral utterance; by the complexity of the range of problems arising when defining the essence of discourse markers and their grammatical status, as well as their general status in modern linguistic science; by the insufficient study of the subject. 2The objective of our research is to scrutinize the problem of discourse markers in modern lingustics and their representation in the historical novel “The President’s Lady” by Irving Stone.
